Forest being(s) – Didier Hamey

For its second temporary exhibition of the year, the Auberge des Dauphins invites Didier Hamey, engraver and sculptor, to exhibit a selection of his works. Born in 1962 in Dunkirk, Didier Hamey now lives in Saoû, in the Drôme, but remains influenced by the atmosphere of carnivals and their folklore. His work, which features in numerous French and international collections, is known for its creations combining elements of nature and dreamlike settings.

The representation of these hybrid beings reveals a fantastical population, born of the plant life nesting between humus and canopy, residing between shadow and light. His latest series of engravings, “Fiori,” draws inspiration from botany. It is a collection of drypoint prints depicting flowers with multiple faces in a palette of fiery red and purple.

Through “Forest Being(s)”, viewers are invited to renew their perspective on natural worlds on the edge of the wild, reactivating the power of the imagination. While the fantastical figures can be admired, the sculptures bring three-dimensional beings to life. The fragilty of a buttefly’s wing combine with the imbalance of a plant stern or the hardness of a crab’s claw in a heterogeneous mixture in harmony with nature.

Charming or terrifying? This wild bestiary is alive. It is there to remind us of the power of our imagination […]. A wild world that thrives as Nature once did, forgotten by mankind.
